The actor Montgomery Clift was well known once he got his script to cut his dialogue when he felt a look could convey as much if not more than the words in the script.
Some writers weren’t happy for sure. One of them for 1948 film The Search (which I highly recommend) threatened legal action against Clift. Though when writer won Oscar for best screenplay he changed his mind and took full credit.
The Lincoln center performing arts library has Monty’s papers in their archives and I’ve looked through a few of his marked up scripts.
